In 2014 the Savo-rail celebrates its 125 anniversary. The rail has
opened the rural region and connected it with economic more developed
areas in the South of Finland.
The opening of the railway station in Hiirola has been a memorable
moment in the life of people living in 1889.
The pupils of class 3 and 4 in Hiirola have painted about the railway
and wrote essays with the content:
"In 1889 I was 10 years old and one day the train stopped the first time
in our village"
Both expressions are examples how to involve children in history and
connect them with what is going on today.
The Savo-rail does not stop in Hiirola for years. The meaning of the
line has no longer that importance as in the past, still it is part of
the local history and local stories.

After the first session the paintings have different starts.

During
the second session it is possible to add new elements, change color,
shape and details to create an image that is impressive.
It is the intention to use some of the paintings to be printed on
postcards and also to design banners which will be used at the railway
stations during the celebration of 125 years Savo-rail.

The final works will be published in the
book THIS IS MY BACKYARD.
