PRE-SCHOOL - ‘THIS IS MY FAVORITE PLACE’ by Marja de Jong

ART CLASS PAINTING

Children in the age of 6 have the possibility to go to pre-school. Their program is quit free and they get lessons in a different way as in regular primary school. Through this year they are more prepared for primary school.

The series has started with a practical introduction about making photos. The children were invited to make images from their class room, the school and the playground to explore different ways of registering their environment. Playing with a piece of paper to select details has been a great experience.

At home they started to photograph their own environment, including details of it.

These series are printed and used as inspiration to start painting. It is interesting to see how young children use the information on a photo to visualize this information through paint. Their developing painter’s handwriting is part of the visualization and guides also their focus on details as well as on the whole photo.

For this series of workshops is chosen to work with gouache. This water based paint has proved to be a good start for painting experiences. Each child gets its own palette with the colors, white, yellow, yellow ochre, magenta, scarlet, light blue and ultramarine. They learn from the beginning to mix their own colors and to work in different layers. There is no water as the paint gets dirty (grey) when it is mixed and thinned. The intensity of the color is important for the power of expression.

During the introduction the children noticed that the whole photo is colored and also that the color of snow can be very different and not only white. The way of painting with a palette and mixing colors is a challenge to explore color and to create an image out of it. These discussions are important elements in the development of the artistic view of children. It opens new ‘perspectives’ and increase their visual language.

To intensify the paintings and their view most of the children have painted two or three times to finish their work. It was possible to start a new painting based on another photo.
