ART CLASS KNITTING

The students of 7th class have a period in which they can practice different
traditional techniques like knitting and weaving. The group in spring 2011
exists of 10 boys and 2 girls. The series has been started with knitting which
results will contribute to an art work in the center of the village. The
workshops have two levels, first the students have to learn how to knit and
second they can design an idea to add to the collective art work.
The techniques used are still traditional in rural Finland and as the students
have frequently experiences with arts and crafts they are interested in having
new challenges. As the results are contributing to the look of the public space
they are involved in the results.
The works of the students will be part of a community art project. In spring
every one can start with knitting, crocheting etc to decorate trees, fences, and
other objects in the center of the village. Artists will be invited to work
together with the participants and to add also their decorations and objects to
it.
In art centre Saksala ArtRadius will be an installation in the yard with knitted
objects as a connection with the village center.
After the different pieces have been finished, these parts are put on the tree
in front of the former municipal house in Haukivuori. At first the parts have to
be connected to keep them together. After completing the
decoration at school it will be replaced on the tree.
