THIS IS OUR NATURE - 3rd CLASS - FELTING
3RD CLASS - ‘HOME BODY’ by Melanie Fitzmaurice, Anna Toljamo and Marja de Jong ART CLASS FELTING
Half of the 3rd class has been felting during several lessons. Felting is a traditional technique and in rural Finland it is very popular. The Australian sculptor Melanie Fitzmaurice has started to work with felting during her stay in the artist-in-residence program winter 2010-2011. She introduced the subject HOME BODIES to the children of the 3rd group by showing how artists combine in their work elements from different origin to create a new piece of art.
A HOME BODY is a doll in which something is added that is important for the maker. After a power point presentation the children started to draw a simple figure that has to be completed with their own important things. There was no limit, except that the figures have to be able to be finally connected to each other as a string. The models Melanie has created are showing the way how thoughts can be directed to a visual form. There are different ways of felting and in this art class the children have got experienced with felting with a needle and through warm water and soap.
